With the goal of snagging younger audiences and the older fans of the original IP, a remake was a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too scenario. I argued at the time that the main reason that Mancini’s dynamite Curse of Chucky went to VOD/DVD instead of theaters in October of 2013 (where the only major horror release that season was the Carrie remake) was that it mostly required you to have seen the prior five Child’s Play/ Chucky films in order to fully enjoy it. I once argued that the remake/reboot was a safer commercial investment than the straight-up series continuation, especially when it came to horror. And it will also enter a theatrical environment where the reboot/remake is arguably less of a boon than the legacy-sequel. But it will exist concurrently with the original continuity, which will live on in Don Mancini’s upcoming TV show. Yes, it’s a remake of a classic 1980’s/1990’s slasher property, the kind of thing that hit paydirt from 2003 ( Texas Chainsaw Massacre) to 2010 ( A Nightmare on Elm Street). Directed by Lars Klevberg, the Tyler Burton-Smith-penned release is in an odd position. I guess this mean’s Sony’s Grudge reboot is ditching that date.
